Gates&#8217; assessment of Biden&#8217;s boss is only slightly better, depicting an Obama administration with very murky lines of communication on military issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Gates, as <em>The New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/08\/world\/asia\/obama-lost-faith-in-his-afghan-strategy-memoir-asserts.html?hpw&amp;rref=politics&amp;pagewanted=all\" data-event-element=\"inline link\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen31117857_899=\"27221\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen31117857_899=\"27221\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time31117857_899=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired31117857_899=\"1\">notes<\/a> in its review of <em>Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War<\/em>, served under every president since Nixon, save Bill Clinton. When President Obama took office in 2009, he (somewhat controversially) decided that Gates would stay as defense secretary, a position to which he was appointed by George W. Bush in 2006. (At that confirmation hearing, Gates reportedly thought to himself, &#8220;What the hell am I doing here?
