Midterm elections are approaching, just four months away, and even though the next Congress will be sworn in January, Republicans will leave nothing to chance as they embark on an aggressive oversight of Biden’s time in office.
Republicans are banking on capturing the House of Representatives, with the top agenda being to impeach President Biden. Impeachment articles are already tabled under the current Congress.
Eight accusations against the President center on various “high crimes,” including the Covid-19 pandemic, mishandling the immigration crisis and border enforcement, withdrawal of U.S troops from Afghanistan, and controversial overseas business dealings by his son, Hunter Biden.
Congresswoman Marjorie Greene (R-Ga) sponsored four of the stated accusations against Biden and
his administration. The intensified calls for impeachment reflect a similar stance on President Trump by Democrats with a conspiracy theory that President Trump had colluded with Russia to bungle the 2016 election.
President Trump had attempted to investigate Biden’s family over corruption dealings with an energy firm, Burisma Holdings in Ukraine. As a Vice President, Biden had made efforts to convince Ukraine to fire Viktor Shokin, its Prosecutor General.
The impeachment push renders Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), a Republican next in line to become Speaker, in an uncanny status as some GOP leaders, including Senator Mitch
McConnell, insist that impeachment will damage Republicans politically.
GOP leaders also propose the impeachment of high-ranking administrators targeting Vice President Harris, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
McCarthy proposed the impeachment of Mayorkas if he was to be found guilty of failing to “secure the border.” McCarthy
states Garland and Mayorkas have compromised our country’s security in their dealings, violated the rule of law, and politicized their departments.
McCarthy is optimistic that the House will pursue his impeachment articles against Congresswoman Marjorie Greene, Mayorkas, and Galland.
Mary Miller, an ardent Trump supporter, also stated that Biden should be impeached for “purposely infringing our immigration laws.”
The decision to endorse impeachment will hinge on unfolding events. Republican Ralph
Norman, for instance, endorsed two impeachments regarding Afghanistan issues but is yet to make final decisions on supporting impeachment articles. According to Austin Livingstone, a Republican spokesman, Ralph Norman will evaluate the efforts for impeachment and how they align with Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution outlining Congress’s impeachment powers.
Republicans have the executive oversight as one of the big 2023 agendas, the impetus being a divided government would cripple Biden’s administration and leave his legislative priorities limping. The House GOP has their work set on taking the White House and the Senate too.
