On Friday, September 12, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), hosted a side event together with two permanent missions to the United Nations and The African Journal. The event, “Truth in Media: Upholding the UN’s Founding Values in the Digital Age,” was held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in observance of the International Day of Peace.

For the New York branch of HWPL, the event also served as an opportunity to mark the 11th anniversary of the HWPL September 18th World Peace Summit set to take place the following week in South Korea.

The September 12th event, which was held on the second floor of the Church Center of the United Nations, explored how media integrity, inclusive dialogue, and media literacy are crucial tools for safeguarding the UN’s founding values. Participants ranged from ambassadors and UN delegates to journalists, religious leaders and members of the local community.

Following opening statements from the event co-hosts, an in-depth panel discussion covered the challenges posed by disinformation and false narratives in the era of AI and social media, as well as the media’s key role in promoting and building peace.

“It’s time to stop war. It’s time to stop conflict. It’s time to build a safe world with integrity, with all people together,” said one delegate and event co-organizer. “It will be difficult because we face many interests and maybe all countries didn’t share the same principle or maybe same interests. But what is important is to not forget that if we want a resilient world, we have to build it on peace.”

HWPL is an international peace non-governmental organization working to promote peace and cessation of war through its focus on international law, religious harmony and peace education.

HWPL’s 11th World Peace Summit, scheduled for September 18-19, will welcome over 770 distinguished guests, including renowned world leaders and representatives from various sectors of society such as religion, media and education. HWPL branches worldwide are also hosting their own commemorative events locally.
