Yesterday, President Biden, along with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, The Honorable Patrick J. Murphy and truck driver Maria Rodriguez, announced the launch of the Task Force Movement: Lifecycle Paths for Veterans and the Military to Trucking. This task force will build a bridge between our trucking industry and our talented veteran workforce – a real investment in our veterans.

During the announcement, President Biden shared that truck drivers have literally carried the nation on their backs, and we know our truckers have been hit hard by COVID-19 — the effects of which are being felt by every American. Minister Buttigieg highlighted staggering numbers showing that “there is still a shortage of 80,000 truck drivers nationwide… It is estimated that 300,000 truck drivers leave the industry each year.” As such, this task force has been launched to drive positive action forward including cutting red tape to obtain trade licenses for transitional service members. While the number of business licenses obtained doubled in January and February of this year alone, there is a lot of work to be done.

Patrick, who will head up this important task force, is the son and grandson of veterans turned truck drivers. He saw for himself the benefits the trucking industry had in supporting his family and community. Patrick shared his observations that “Our veteran community and trucking industry faces unique challenges, from unemployment and underemployment to driver shortages, and our country’s consumers feel the brunt of that. This task force is about opportunity, it’s about the future of America, it’s about making sure America comes back. To work “.

This task force provides a formidable collaborative platform, filling a huge need in our country by leveraging our talented veteran community.
